Thousands of gallons of aviation fuel have spilled underground, and crews are working to clean it up, officials told NBC10. The hazmat situation was reported at East 4th (River Road) near Coates Street at around 3:30 p.m. At around 5 p.m., Bridgeport officials clarified that most nearby residents are being asked to shelter-in-place, but some may be evacuated out of an abundance of caution. The pipe belongs to Sunoco and the accident occurred during excavation work, officials said. No word yet on how far or deep the fuel spilled underground.
